Ruins at Mine Hill Mercury processing facility Date: 03/19/2007 This is a rotary furnace (the fat pipe at right) and condenser (at left) that was used to cook the mineral cinnabar to extract and condense mercury vapor. This facility remained in operation until sometime in the 1970s. Signs on the fence warn that rodents in the park have a strange-sounding disease. Scary!

Umunhum Former site of Almaden Airforce Station Date: 03/19/2007 Pointing to Mount Umunhum, the former site of Almaden Air Force Station, a cold-war era radar site, and now part of the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District . At the moment the Mt. Um' area is presently off-limits, but I would love to sneak up there some day!
