A Samish tribal story tells of a maiden, named Kokwalawoot, who was attracted to a man from the sea, and he to her. Eventually she joined him to live in the sea. When the Samish people were considerate and respectful of the marine life, the sea harvest was abundant. If they did not take care of the resources as they should, the harvest suffered.
